Plus size dressing tips

What to wear and what not to wear can be confusing at the best of times. But by following a few key points, you can wear clothes that make the most of your body and make you look just as good, if not better than your thinner counterpart.

Here are our tips to help you choose the right wardrobe.

It’s important to remember that in order to achieve the best look you can you must have a good look at yourself in the mirror and identify your bodies weakest points. This will help you decide which part of the body should be highlighted and which parts not so highlighted so that you can create a great kind of optical illusion effect.

Every person’s body is a different shape, however bodies generally fall into a couple of categories.

The Apple

Those who are larger at the top either around the shoulders or breast area, and have a thinner tummy or thighs are commonly known as apples which is a little harsh and a bit hard to understand but let’s carry on. Those who are apples need to dress down the upper half of the body and show off the bottom half.

If you’re an apple and have large breast, don’t make the mistake of wearing a bra that is too tight. It’s worth getting a proper bra measurement taken at a shop, which many now offer for free. You’d be surprised how many women actually wear a bra that is too small, and have been doing so for years.

If you are larger up top, then you need to draw the eye away from the breast area, this can be achieved by perhaps wearing a skirt that has a flare to it. This will take eye away from the breasts and give you a much more balanced look. Wearing a darker coloured top, and enhancing say the waist area with colour will also help the balanced look effect. If your shoulders and the tops of your arms are a weak point, then wear a top with long sleeves.

The Pear

Those who are larger around the waist area and smaller up top fall into the pear category. A pear shaped person needs to draw emphasis to the breast area to help balance out the larger waist.

A good choice for pears is to wear a blouse that hangs just past the waist line, this will help create a longer look are draw the eye away from the waist area. Also if you add a jacket or blazer over the blazer this will emphasize this effect and also make you look slimmer. When it comes to colour, pears do the opposite to and apple, wear lighter colour tops and darker coloured skirts.
The Strawberry
If you have broad shoulders then and your hips and legs are a lot thinner then you are a strawberry. You will have some great legs, so why not show them off.
When choosing a dress to wear, strawberries should avoid a halter dress. This will make you shoulders look bigger than they actually are. You need to create a balanced effect. So a dress with a single strap will look good and one which perhaps has volume to the skirt area. This will make sure that your body looks balanced.
As far as colour goes, don’t choose anything too bright or bold. Leave the neck lace at home and go for a clutch bag and bracelet to add accessories.
Accessorise

Wearing accessories is another great technique to help draw the eye away from the areas of weakness. For larger breasted ladies a long scarf can be worn which will help hide the breasts.

A pear could try a broach, this will also draw to the eye to the breast area rather than the waist. Pears should also try to avoid wearing belts.

Remember that it’s important when you shop for new clothes, that you try everything on and have a good look in the mirror to see how it fits especially plus size evening gowns. In time you will learn which materials, styles, cuts suit your body. Don’t be scared to purchase something new, that you wouldn’t normally wear. Many women always by what they are comfortable with, which is not always the best clothes to suit their body. You don’t need to be a bride at a wedding to look good wearing clothes that suit you.
